Medusa, one of the most iconic figures in Greek mythology, is often depicted as a monstrous creature with snakes for hair and the ability to turn anyone who looked at her into stone. Originally, Medusa was said to be a beautiful maiden, serving as a priestess in the temple of Athena. However, after being violated by Poseidon in Athena's temple, she was transformed by the enraged goddess into a Gorgon, a fearsome beast with serpents for hair and a gaze that petrified. This transformation turned Medusa into both a symbol of victimization and a powerful figure of rage and retribution. She lived on the island of Sarpedon, a place of exile for her, until she was beheaded by the hero Perseus with the help of Athena and Hermes. Perseus used a mirrored shield to avoid direct eye contact with her during the battle. Medusa's head, even in death, retained its petrifying power and was used by Perseus as a weapon before being given to Athena, who placed it on her shield or breastplate. The story of Medusa encompasses themes of beauty, rage, punishment, and protection, making her a complex and enduring figure in ancient mythology.
